KAWS INCORPORATING ART INTO ADVERTISEMENTS
Kaws Brian Donnelly became well known initially as a graffiti artist in America in the 90s. Some of his first work was spray painting his tag 'KAWS' and a scull with 'X' eyes onto the large landscape bill boards, mainly for Marlborough cigarettes at that time. Kaws then unlike any other graffiti artist, started to remove advertising posters from bus stops and photo-booths as he could lift the plastic protectors and take them home. He would then manipulate the advertisement by adding one of his characters, incorporating it to the extent that you would initially think that it was part of the ad. Ironically Kaws has since been commissioned by large brands such as Vans and Marc Jacobs and do an album cover for Kanye West.
I think the KAWS character that he added to the Maidenform underwear ad poster is particularly good, as he matched the orange of the text to his characters hair/ears, then plays with the idea that the character is hugging the model. It looks like that this is the ad, but if you stop and actually look at what you seeing you realise that this can't be the ad. He does a similar thing with the Calvin Klein perfume ad and matches the Kaws face and tail, to the colour of the perfume.
All his graffiti work, is obviously graffiti but his approach is such that the work blends in so well with the backdrop he is painting on to that you don't actuary realise what you are looking at initially.
